God's Universe and Clay Vessels

I am not an astronomer. However, I am an admirer of God's creation. Many times as a young boy I would lay on the lawn at night and try to count stars. I did not know that the human eye can only see about 5,000 stars---actually only half that amount. You have to be on the other side of the world to see the other 2,500.

Astronomers think there could be 100,000,000,000 stars in our galaxy! In recent scientific writings there is discussion of new stars and new galaxies forming. While man has no instrument to see the edge of the universe there is speculation that the universe is expanding.

Hold on. How can the edge of nothing become the beginning of something? How can the sum total of all that is grow into a larger sum total?

There is talk of sending a man-made space-craft to Mars. It is a big dream for man to travel about 240,00,000 miles. The sun is about 93,000,000 miles. The moon is about 240,000 miles (1/1,000 of the distance to Mars). Man going to Mars is still in the dream stage of technology. Keep in mind we do yet have power to control a thunderstorm, a hurricane or earthquake.

There may be 10,000,000,000 (billion) galaxies in the observable universe! The number of stars in a galaxy varies---or is unknown, but assuming an average of 100 billion stars per galaxy  there may be 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (that's 1 billion trillion) stars in the observable universe!

Scientists estimate that the diameter of the known universe (our galaxy alone) is about 93 billion LIGHT YEARS. Sorry, I not have time to write the number of actual miles of this amount.

Yes, I know this is a letter from a pastor. No, I am not an astronomer, just Googling from the experts and trying to scope how big God is. As I research for this writing it becomes clear that our most brilliant scientists see so little and know so little. There is huge disagreement among our brightest astronomers!

What can God do? What can God not do? He creates stars---all of them. He names stars. He creates galaxies, setting them in families.

I feel small. Humbled. I am about 195 pounds of clay and water. The Creative God of stars and the universe scooped up dust, formed man and breathed soul into him. The Creative God of the universe sacrificed heaven's best to become flesh, die on a cross for our sins, be buried in a borrowed tomb and rise from the grave! All this to redeem earthen vessels!

I am a pastor. My job is to work with the pastoral team and elders to form leadership for our congregation. We are called to holiness. We are called to obedience. We are called to sacrifice. We are called to discipleship. We are called to lead.

Vessels of clay The Almighty has chosen to use for his glory. Vessels of clay valued and redeemed by heaven. WE cannot comprehend the measure of this love. WE cannot see to the edges of the universe and grasp the depth, width and height of his love.

This we can do. We can follow Jesus. Never getting ahead of the Holy Spirit. Never letting our ego disrupt the divine plan God has for our earthen vessels. Never allowing culture or flesh to contravene or cheat Christ of the glory of His Church.

The eyes and ears of Our God are open to bless our obedience. This we also know: God will bless obedience more than our dream trip to Mars.

 Much love

Pastor Bare

I Samuel 15:22 (Prophet Samuel to King Saul) “…To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”

I John 3:1 “Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knowth us not, because it knew him not.”
