Survival
Survival shows are a big hit on TV. The truth of what is being done is perhaps questionable. TV has a way of being deceptive. The idea is that contestants are challenged to live on an island, eat worms, jump from high places, etc., in hopes they will be the “surviving” member of a team---to win money, prizes, or just to be known as the “last” survivor.
There is another survival course in which every person is a contestant. It is the Course of Life. Testing grounds. Obstacles placed by the devil, by happenstance, by adversaries, by friends, and by God.
It is true that God does not tempt us to sin. But it is also true that God stretches us to test our faith and love for Him. He does allow circumstances to evolve that will challenge us to make decisions toward God. There are no dumb tests, e.g., eating live worms. What God sets before us is open doors. Opportunities to think right, choose right, and do right. Every right choice brings us closer in fellowship with Our Heavenly Father.
Last week I wrote to you about not allowing trash in the backyard. Your response was/is appreciated [pastor@covenantchurch.net]. It means a lot to hear from you and to know that these writings are core encouragement for you to survive.
When I say “survive” it is not intended as getting you to a place of winning earthly treasures. Survive is intended and perceived as being powerful, effective, generous (fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22,23).
This past week a pilot crashed his plane into one of the Great Lakes in North America. When he hit the water he took off his trousers and shoes to be sure they did not weigh him down. Then he treaded water for 18 hours---finally waving a white sock caught the attention of someone who rescued him. He had prepared his body and mind for survival.
Considering that satan has plans for our early and horrible demise. Considering that we are created by God. Considering that our time on earth is short and eternity is long. We need training to survive.
The federal government encourages us to be prepared for 72 hours with food, flashlight, water, basic medicines, and shelter. We are told we should not be dependent upon outside help for 72 hours in case of emergency.
God encourages us to study the Survival Manual (Bible) and be prepared to live each day until life on this earth is completed.
Central to the wisdom of surviving is community---the Body. Getting with and being part of a fellowship that prays, works and worships together. The invitation to follow Jesus inherently joins us with His Body---the Church.
Those who choose to try and survive on their own are reckless. Honesty, openness, accountability, being teachable, caring, loving, forgiving, trusting…all serve to open our hearts to invest in the team. We know that if others are strong our hope of finishing well is strengthened by standing together.
…a Crown of Life…will be our reward.
Now go and share the Good News of Jesus with others. This is too good to keep for yourself. There is grace for everyone. You only gain when you share God’s love for others.
