A Man

Twenty-eight years ago a career postal employee turned his heart toward a struggling congregation in Caroline County, Virginia, a rural area with a strong African American population. Pastor Berryman followed God’s call to assume leadership of St. John’s Baptist Church, a church that had experienced both good years and struggling years. At the time of Pastor Berryman’s acceptance of the charge, Sunday attendance was about 30.

A man of strong principles, and with a wife, Joan, equally strong, they committed to change a culture. From his leadership in the Post system Pastor Berryman knew how to plan, organize, and establish long-term goals.

His strong voice aptly complemented his preaching. The bonus was his ability to sing. With a rich baritone and strong lungs he continues to be able to move congregations.

Joan has been right in the middle of the progress. No nonsense. Excellent teacher. Respected by men and women, Joan speaks when it counts, "cutting to the chase,” and landing on target.

The sanctuary has been remodeled. A social hall and commercial kitchen have been added. Parking has been expanded. Attendance now requires two morning services.

Awarded an honorary doctorate by a leading seminary, Pastor Berryman is considered a bishop of other ministers. Having served as President of a large fellowship of ministers, he is much sought after for preaching conferences, revivals, and special meetings. He is a powerful and gifted Spirit-filled speaker.

At age 76 he still sees the green light. Dreams are on the planning board. He is interactive with politicians and public officials. A program has been established to assist congregational members in buying a home. A non-profit foundation is being established to facilitate developing care for elderly in the county. The plan for the elderly of Caroline County to spend their last years in a care facility near their home was initiated by Pastor Berryman and has high hopes of fulfillment in the not too distant future. He is a man among men.

Pastor Berryman is a man who sees character and integrity as being more important than skin color or culture. His burden is people and the work of the Church that belongs to Our Lord.

This Friday, September 28, 7 PM, Pastor Berryman and Joan will be with us in worship at Covenant Church. He will share with us as the Holy Spirit directs.

Yesterday we began a week of fasting and praying. We are seeking refreshment and guidance from the Holy Spirit. We are seeking wisdom from the Lord how we may be ever more effective in fulfilling the Great Commission. We are sincerely praying that leaders of the Church, locally, nationally, and internationally, will speak with clarion voices messages as Christ would speak. We pray for all of God’s people to humbly serve the poor and needy.

Thursday night 7 PM will be a time of gathering. John Okaah will lead a time of exhorting and prayer. Friday will be a revival service in the NT building with music and ministry from Pastor Berryman for the entire congregation. Saturday 9-11 AM, Pastor McCready will lead a time of exhortation and prayer. You are invited to participate in the fasting and all of these times of gathering. Come and experience the times of worship even if you have not been able to participate in the fast.

I look forward to seeing you. And I look forward to seeing what great things God will do among and through us! A man or woman plus God is still a phenomenon that pushes back the gates of hell!

Much love—
