Disciple Web BannerOur Story

Covenant began in 1952 with eleven members. Services were conducted in a store building on Hinton Avenue. The congregation built a new church on Altavista Avenue and moved into it in January 1955. Construction completed after the move included a parsonage and an annex with classrooms and a fellowship hall. In 1980 the congregation again relocated to an educational facility on Rio Road, with the new parsonage being completed a year later.

Pastor Harold L. Bare, Sr., assumed the pastorate in September of 1981, and construction began immediately on the sanctuary, additional classrooms and fellowship hall. Services in the new sanctuary were held on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1982.

Since 1982, ministries have steadily expanded. A strong emphasis on foreign missions predicated a growing missions effort for the local community. Ministries to the elderly, handicapped, imprisoned, etc., evolved. The burden for people enlarged to include other churches, retired ministers, American Indians, and pioneering new churches.

In March 1996 Covenant moved their worship services into a new 500-seat auditorium built adjacent to the older structure. The new facility also includes a full size Gymnasium and recreation area.

In 2007 Covenant Church celebrated 55 years of worldwide ministry, as well as 25 years of Pastor & Laila Bare’s leadership of the local body. We are grateful for the mighty blessings of God upon this congregation.

Today, Covenant Church averages 1,000 in Sunday morning attendance. We are trans-cultural, crossing ethnic, racial, social and economic barriers. The heart of our mission leads us to assist and encourage brothers and sisters around the globe.

We believe:

  • In the verbal inspiration of the Bible.
  • In one God eternally existing in three persons; namely, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
  • That Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of the Father, conceived of the Holy Ghost, and born of the Virgin Mary. That Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised from the dead. That He ascended to heaven and is today at the right hand of the Father as the Intercessor.
  • That all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and that repentance is commanded of God for all and necessary for forgiveness of sins.
  • That justification, regeneration, and the new birth are wrought by faith in the blood of Jesus Christ.
  • In sanctification subsequent to the new birth, through faith in the blood of Christ; through the Word, and by the Holy Ghost.
  • Holiness to be God’s standard of living for His people.
  • In the baptism with the Holy Ghost subsequent to a clean heart.
  • In speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance and that it is the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
  • In water baptism by immersion, and all who repent should be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
  • Divine healing is provided for all in the atonement.
  • In the Lord’s Supper and washing of the saints’ feet.
  • In the pre-millennial second coming of Jesus. First, to resurrect the righteous dead and to catch away the living saints to Him in the air. Second, to reign on the earth a thousand years.
  • In the bodily resurrection; eternal life for the righteous, and eternal punishment for the wicked.
The Future Of Covenant
Strategic planning is an important part of the creation, development and growth of any organization. Ministries that are interested in church growth are not exempt from planning.

Church planning helps the organization map out strategic steps to achieve its mission and vision.

Churches can experience a level of success without a plan, but those who invest the time and resources into developing a specific strategy and plan can achieve success at a much quicker pace.

This is why Covenant is so passionate about planning and preparation for the future of the church.

We at Covenant Church believe that Children’s Ministry is not a daycare or childcare. Children’s Ministry is a ministry that is a safe and secure place where we believe children of all ages can learn about Jesus in a safe and sound atmosphere. Our newly remodeled nursery and preschool are structured so that the children can learn about Jesus while interacting with toys. Our Kids church which is for Kindergarten to 5th grade is formatted the same way as the adult service. The only difference is it is in kid’s language.

We strive to provide a foundation for our little ones, teaching them that they can make us a difference. Some our outreaches and community events are Back to School Bash, Overnighter, Vacation Bible School, Birthday Party for Jesus, Play- dates, Children’s Choir, Community Fall Festival, and more. Contact Pastor Dana Carrier if you would like more information on Children’s Ministry.
CARE Ministry

If you are suffering an illness or grieving the loss of a loved one, we have CAREing servants desiring to walk with you as you go through difficult moments. With compassion we will share words of comfort, spiritual encouragement, and prayer as you strive to return to the fullest measure of health and wellbeing possible. Our question is always, “how may we help?”

When you know you or a family member is ill and will be undergoing a medical procedure or is suffering the loss of someone dear please make us aware of it by email or phone. We will be there for you.

Connection Points’ mission is to assist in the growth, integration, and retention of the church body through the ministries of Greeting, Ushering, Welcome Center, and the Ambassador Program.

We are involved in all facets of the Sunday ministries provided by greeters, ushers, Welcome Center workers, and the Ambassador Program which is designed to contact and connect people who are new to Covenant.

We are passionate about reaching out to the immigrants in our community (so called internationals) by showing God’s love through sharing, caring and serving, to serve and allow the Holy Spirit to bring them to Jesus. We strive to set up programs to help the varied needs of all people groups. We are here to break the barriers of different cultures and religious background and unite people under God and to educate internationals to become good citizens.

Our mission is to provide enrichment opportunities to promote fellowship, mentorship, and spiritual growth as we support our sisters in Christ, and provide a safe haven for new friendships to grow. We do this through connection, support, and ministry to all women.

A LIFE Group is 3-12 people gathering in a leader’s home as they participate in a unique Bible-based curriculum. The goal is to connect with others, grow to be more like Christ and impact the community with the Gospel as you live the LIFE God has for you.
Most of the groups gather together every week and go through a lesson that is based on the sermon from the previous weekend. The lesson includes a time to get to know each other, Bible study and application, worship and an evangelstic or service focus. Also, as a natural byproduct of all this, the people in the groups experience true community and are a snapshot of what the original Church in Acts looked like. Again, the goal of each group is to encourage and challenge each other to live the LIFE God has for each of us.

Our Men’s Ministry meets together on the 4th Saturday of the month at 7:30 AM in the O.T. Café. We enjoy a wonderful, hearty breakfast together. There are special speakers every  month, along with a time of Q & A with Pastor Bare.

Do you have a natural gift for electronics, sound or video equipment? Or maybe you just have a strong desire to learn, along with a passion to serve the body of Christ? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are invited to join us!

The purpose of the Media Ministry here at Covenant Church is to carry the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our visually-driven, ever-changing world through the use of technology and media, and to equip other ministries of the church to use digital and electronic media as a worship and outreach tool.
There are many opportunities for you to serve in Media ministry. Covenant staff are here to help you learn what you’ll need to know and have fun in the process! If you would like more information about our media ministry or want to volunteer as a team member, let us know!

Through the Bible (Gary Glover) – O.T. Café
In our continuing study of Luke, Christ is born and growing “strong in spirit”. This “red letter” portion of the Gospels is foundational for our understanding of all the rest of the Scriptures and is vital to our secure walk with Christ. This study also includes excursions into the other Gospels and into the Old Testament prophecies surrounding Jesus’ life and work.

Upward Climbers (Thurman Henry & Dennis Holmberg) – Teen Room

Utilizing the Standard Bible Study Commentary, this session will be an in-depth study of The Book of Joshua. Though comprised mainly of senior adults, anyone may attend this study.

Guard Your Gates (Jack & Jean Griffin) – N.T. Café

“Above all else guard your heart for it affects everything you do.” (Proverbs 4:23) The Bible teaches that strife opens the gate for many problems. “For wherever there is jealousy, envy and contention (rivalry and selfish ambition) there will also be confusion (unrest disharmony, rebellion and all sorts of evil and vile practices.” (James 3:16) The purpose of this class is to expose and deal with strife which can destroy families, church, businesses and the nation.

Impostor: Finding the Courage to Be Yourself (Flora Kelly) – Room 102
There is a Satanic deception that often tells us that who we are is not good enough. As a result of not knowing who we are in Christ, we believe lies about ourselves and create masks in an effort to live up to unrealistic expectations and avoid further hurt and pain. In this class, we will look at why we pretend, and how to give up the “try hard” life once and for all. It is time to eliminate masks and find our true identity in Christ.
Intimate Encounters (James & Donna Touchton) – Room 201
Family is vital to the church. The core of every family is a healthy marriage. Whether you are preparing for marriage, would like to improve a good marriage, or are hoping to rebuild a troubled marriage, Intimate Encounters gives you the tools you need to find the closeness you desire; a practical guide to discovering the secrets to making your marriage better. For more information contact James & Donna Touchton: james.touchton63@gmail.com or dtouch85@gmail.com.
Discover Your God-Given Gifts Part 2 (Laila Bare) – Room 202
Discover Your God-Given Gifts continues! Discover Your God-Given Gifts helps one understand and appreciate their giftedness and other’s! You will leave this class with a better understanding of yourself, others, and God! Discover Your God-Given Gifts is for those who have completed Part I of this class, or for those who have taken the class before and would like a refresher.

The purpose of the Media Ministry here at Covenant Church is to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our visually-driven, ever-changing world through the use of technology and media. The strength of Covenant Church can be found in the generosity and commitment of its people. Proverbs 21:26 says, “The godly love to give” (TLB). his is seen through the countless volunteer hours offered to run community programs, in those serving in church services and through those who financially support the church and its initiatives.

Tithes & Offerings

We believe in the biblical principles of tithes and offerings: if everyone takes care of the principle of tithes and offerings, it provides resource to create a healthy community and organization.
In Malachi, the Bible talks about bringing the first 10% (tithe) of our income into the storehouse (church). If you do, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in!”. Let’s believe for God to provide for us as a church, as we obey His Word in bringing our tithes.
